The University of Derby

University of Derby provides you with a truly international experience having over 17,000 students studying including over 1000 international students from across 76 countries and 700 EU students from across 26 countries. Being a fully recognised and accredited English university, your qualifications will be recognised worldwide. The University of Derby has two safe campuses in the heart of the UK, 30 miles apart. They are both easy to get to by road, rail and air. Derby, a lively city, which is less than an hour from Birmingham and about an hour and a half from London by train and Buxton, a picturesque small town on the edge of the Peak District National Park – perfect if you like the countryside. Buxton is about an hour from Derby and Manchester and three hours from London. It’s a popular tourist destination with over one million visitors each year.

With an investement of £100 million in the last few years, University of Derby gives you some of the best and newest facilities in the UK. The University of Derby pride themselves on being friendlier and more supportive than other universities. Supporting you from the moment you start thinking about which course to choose, right through to your graduation – for help or advice, just ask. The University of Derby is one of the top three modern universities for safety, the standard of their accommodation, their financial procedures, and the health and faith support. The campuses in Derby and Buxton are both friendly and safe, with a good standard of living at a reasonable cost.

Most international students live in halls of residence – they are not far from the campuses and they are good value for money. The halls are comfortable, safe and convenient. They are made up of individual flats, with about six students living together, and have excellent facilities including; a well equipped shared kitchen, a bathroom, a coin operated laundry, on site 24 hour staff and security and free bike storage. If you want to rent a house or flat with your friends, then The University of Derby can help you to find the right place, through their registered private housing scheme. Together with the council and the landlord, they assess all of the properties registered with them, so you can be confident that it will be safe and comfortable.

The welcome week for international students takes place a week before the UK students arrive. The university will introduce you to all aspects of the university and of living in England. You will get lots of practical information and advice, and you will meet the staff, explore Derby and Buxton and socialise with students from all over the world. It’s a good way to settle in, make friends and get your time at the University of Derby off to a great start.

The University knows that you will probably be taking a course to improve your career prospects, so the courses are focused on helping you with this. Because of their close links with employers, some of the courses offer placement opportunities and the chance to build up good contacts that will help you to find a job when you graduate. The University always ask their students first when they have a part time job or work placement opportunity to fill at the University. They organise competitions, such as The Entrepreneur, to help you to develop your business and enterprise skills. Many of their courses are accredited by professional bodies to make sure you develop the knowledge and skills employers are looking for. You will have lots of opportunities to build up the skills employers want – just look out for the Skill Builder icon on activities and jobs.
